pregnancy with blue cross blue shield health insurance?

How much did you end up paying after you pregnancy? The hospital I go to always screws up with my insurance so I want to make sure they don't mess it up again. Thanks!

There are many different plans and how much you end up owing depends on various things.

First you need to call your obstetrician's office and how much they charge for a vaginal delivery and a c-section. Usually, all of your pre-natal care is included in this charge.

Secondly, you need to call BCBS. They are usually pretty easy to deal with. (I know this as an insured member and as a formal medical biller.) Tell them you are having a baby and you need to know about your plan's coverage for a hospital stay and for your obstetrician. Here are some questions to ask:

At what percentage of my hospital stay should be covered? Is this subject to a deductible? If so, what is my deductible? What is the out-of-pocket limit on my plan?

(As an example, if your hospital charge were $1000 and you had a $200 deductible, you would be responsible for the first $200. Your insurance would then cover 80% of the remaining $800 ($640). Depending on whatever contract BCBS with your hospital, you would owe as much as the other $160 as well.)

While you are on the phone with them, you need to ask them the same questions for your obstetrician office. You need to ask if pre-certification is required. Some plans require that you call them with in 48 hours of delivery or they won't pay. You need to ask how long of a hospital stay your plan will cover. Most only allow 48 hours after delivery, but some allow less and refuse to cover any time longer. You also need to find out what you need to do to have your child added to your plan after birth.

Basically, you will have charges for your pre-natal care and delivery from your obstetrician and for your care in the hospital. You will also be billed for your child's care in the hospital. It's pretty hard to pin down the hospital for any cost estimate. I seem to remember it being about $4000 with my first child, and I had to pay about $2000. (Bad plan then.) I think a normal vaginal delivery runs somewhere around $6000 for everything combined, but my numbers could be fuzzy since I have better insurance now that covered everything with my second child. Your insurance, if it's any good should cover about 80% after deductible.
